Fidson partners with schools to enhance academic performance

The management of Fidson Healthcare Plc has decried the falling standard of education, saying if nothing is done to stem the trend, Nigerian children might be ill-prepared to face future challenges.

At a press conference on Thursday announcing the Season 2 of Astymin Brilliance Reward, a programme that was launched in 2011 in partnership with primary schools to reward outstanding pupils in their final year, the company’s Marketing Manager, Mr. Ola Ijimakin, noted that though the social media like Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Twitter, among others should, ordinarily, be used as information-gathering avenues for overall good performance, most Nigerian children use them as platforms for various delinquencies, including the sharing of phonographic materials.

Ijimakin said, “The reading culture among teens and youths in Nigeria is worrisome; and the drive for academic excellence is no longer strong. Today’s teens would rather dream of quick money, fame, social and political influence, instead of academic excellence.”

He disclosed that it was against this background that the Astymin Brilliance Reward was born.

He said, “The project is one of the ways Fidson is partnering with primary schools to reward outstanding pupils. This, we believe, will motivate them to stay focused on their studies, knowing that hard work will be rewarded.”

The inaugural edition of the programme was held in July 2011, while the second edition holds later in the month.

“This year’s edition will bring together the best pupils from about 200 primary schools from Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states; and we will be building on the success of the inaugural edition.

“The pupils will have the opportunity to network, make friends and play under a relaxed and fun-filled atmosphere.

“We will continue to monitor and support the academic progress of our award winners, to ensure that they stay focused and to also further gear them towards greatness,” Ijimakin said.
